The Mysterious Imagery of The Dollar Bill

Dollar bills: we look at them every day, yet how many of us truly pay attention to anything besides the denomination value? The fact is, numerous symbols adorn our currency and there has been intense debate over the decades of their meaning. Conspiracy theorists believe the imagery is rooted in Freemansonry and tied to the Illuminati (if you’ve read The Da Vinci Code or seen the movie, you know who they are). Others contend the imagery is strictly American and represents the foundations of our nation. In this infographic, we explain each symbol from both perspectives.

Some of your explanation of the symbolism is incomplete. 32 degrees in Scottish Rite Masonry, 32 in York Rite Masonry. 32 and 33 correspond to the number of vertebra in the spinal column (some say 32 others 33). 9 corresponds to the ‘work upon oneself’ (it is not something unique to the York Rite Masonic system). 13 is death and resurrection, that is total change to overcome oneself (think Jesus plus his 12 disciples). The eye is the ‘all seeing eye’ which should be understood in this context: “…Justice will sooner or later overtake us and although our thoughts, words and actions may be hidden from the eyes of men, yet that All-Seeing Eye, whom the Sun, Moon and Stars obey, and under Whose care even Comets perform their stupendous revolutions, pervades the innermost recesses of the human Heart, and will reward us according to our merits.” Meaning that the eye is God’s watching us and sees what we hide from human eyes. The 5-pointed star (with 2 points down and 1 up) represents an upright person, but with the 2 points up and 1 down it represents an evil person. 13 5-pointed stars mean that when we die to our evil self, our “sin” or “psychological defects” or our “infidel nature” (which is all inside of ourselves), we resurrect as a new person or, in this case, a new nation of upright people. And like the other commenter “Fred” said, the stars make a 6 pointed star which represents the balance of 3 positive and 3 negative aspects of matter and spirit.

I believe #13 is arguably incorrect. The bundle of arrows represents strength not war as a single arrow can be easily broken but bundled together, they cannot.

Great infographic overall. However, I take issue with a couple of points: 1.) I’m calling on 4 years of Latin in High School (which is longer ago than I care to admit) but I remember XVI in Roman numerals as being 16. 2.) The arrows in the eagle’s claws do not represent war. They were a symbol taken from the Iroquois confederacy- You can break one arrow easily. But it you have 5 arrows, their combined strength makes them much harder to break. It symbolized the strength in numbers that the union of 13 states provided.

@ CC you are right but you forgot the rest of the number. Look at the bottom of the pyramid and you will see mdcclxxvi.
