People who travel often and pay for both hotel stays and airfare can find many advantages to using a hotel credit card. Whenever it comes to the best travel credit cards, I think companies affiliated with the specific hotel loyalty programs tend to offer the best rewards. Here are what my favorite hotel credit cards for 2019.

  • Best for perks: Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card
  • Best for travel redemption: Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card
  • Best for selection variety: IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card

The bonus offer for qualifying new cardmembers is 75,000 bonus points after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening with the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card.

The annual fee for Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card is $95. You can receive a free night stay after your account anniversary date, valid for a one night hotel stay at a property with a redemption level up to 35,000 points.

This card offers an accelerated way to earn Elite Status. You will automatically receive Silver Elite Status each year as a cardmember, complimentary in-room internet access, mobile check-in, and late checkout (when available), among other perks. You can earn Gold Elite Status when you spend $35,000 on purchases each account year.

Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card does not charge a foreign transaction fee for purchases made outside the United States made directly onto this credit card.

Best for travel redemption: Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card is a straightforward travel rewards card. Qualified new cardmembers who spend $3,000 within 3 months of opening the account can earn a one-time bonus offer of 50,000 miles, equal to $500 in travel redemption. There are no foreign transaction fees when you charge purchases made outside the United States to your Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card. The introductory annual fee for the first year of account opening is $0 and after that the annual fee is $95.

Cardholders can earn unlimited 2X miles for every $1 spent on eligible everyday purchases with this card. Plus, earn 10X miles on thousands of hotels, though January 2020 when booking hotels at hotels.com/venture.

This card made the list because, the bottom line, is you can use your Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card to make travel purchases on any website or app for any hotel of your choosing.

Travel rewards are good for more than just hotel stays. Cardholders can redeem points for statement credits on virtually any travel purchase: airlines, hotels, cruises, rental cars, and more. Simply redeem points as a statement credit. Miles won’t expire for the life of the account and there’s no limit to how many you can earn, but the statement credit benefit must be used within 90 days from the date your travel purchases post to your account. Your account must be open and in good standing to be eligible to redeem for rewards.

Some other perks that Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card cardholders enjoy are access to useful credit building tools using CreditWise® from Capital One® as well as Visa Signature® Benefits such as complimentary upgrades and special savings at hotels, resorts and spas with your Visa Signature card. Hotel Card Wrap-Up

With the large number of hotel rewards credit cards available, it can seem difficult to choose the best one. Keep in mind that signing up for multiple cards within a short period of time may hurt your credit score, so it is important to take the time to choose one or two cards that may be a good fit.

If the card has an annual fee, be sure the benefits, perks and any rewards you earn balance out the cost of the annual fee.

Individuals who pay off their entire credit card balance each month may not be overly concerned with the variable APRs of each card and may choose to focus more on the benefits. You typically will not be charged interest on purchases if you pay your entire balance on-time, by the due date each month. However the card issuer usually will begin charging interest on balance transfers and cash advances on the transaction date. (If the card offers a 0% introductory APR offer on purchases and/or balance transfers, then interest may not be charged on eligible balances for the duration of the introductory period, after which the on-going APRs will apply.) Not carrying a balance may also ensure that interest won’t cancel out the earned travel and hotel rewards that make these cards so desirable.

If you are brand loyal than a card such as Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card or the IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card may be a better fit. If you are looking for a card where you can use your rewards for any hotel of your choosing then a card like the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card may be worth a closer look.
